NST - Dream Win For Punk Rock Band Y2k

KUALA LUMPUR: Punk rock band Y2K rocked their way to the tune of RM50,000 when they were pronounced champion of The Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) Challenge Malaysia last night.

The finals took place at the packed Club C18 in front of a prestigious judging panel comprising Ali Bakar, Zamani Ibrahim and Sarwanie Ahmad, Life Records production and promotion executive Ismail Ali and ROTTW publisher and managing editor Mohd Rom Mohd Noor.

With this win, the three-piece outfit from Kuala Lumpur, who were masked, also won a recording contract with Life Records and a trip to London as the official Malaysian representative.

They will compete with 37 of the world's best bands in a three-day music festival, The Global Battle of the Bands or The GBOB Challenge, to be held in London, England on Dec 4.

During the finals last night, Y2K, which comprises Khairil Mokhzani Bahar aka Monsieur Poubelle (bass/vocals), Paul Naquiddin Mohd aka The Naq (drums) and Saiful Azlan Freezailah aka Hermano Grande (guitar/vocals) beat five other equally talented bands.
They performed their self-composed piece Lara, a Malay and English number, and From A Distance.

Dynamism, great skills, good tunes, snappy lyrics and a tight performance clinched them the win.

"We were just having fun on the stage. If we didn't, we were not doing it right," Khairil said. He was excited about the GBOB Challenge in London. "We hope to put in a very good performance there."

Thank You, All!

Well, the show's finally over. Sorry it took so long to post this, but we were so damn tired and worn out after the show that we pretty much passed out and hibernated for a week.

For all those that came, thank you so much. From the feedback, it's obvious that a large percentage of you guys were happy with the show, and we couldn't be more glad. It was definitely a fun-filled evening of punk-rock madness, and we at FYI would like to thank you all for being such a good crowd.

NOFX (contrary to what some may believe) said they had a blast and were particularly impressed by you guys, the crowd. Whilst all of you moshed and jumped about and were inches away from them, you didn't at any point attempt to bum-rush the stage and make merry havoc which, I assume, is the complete opposite of how shows are in the rest of the world. Needless to say, the band was happy and we're glad you guys were happy too.

Also, since a lot of people have been asking, I'd like to take this moment to reply to the biggest question on the comments board: when will FYI release a VCD?

You're right, there were people shooting throughout the night, but the FYI film crew were only shooting Y2k and King Lychee, whereas the NOFX film crew were shooting NOFX. They're planning on releasing a documentary (I think) and they've been shooting throughout the whole tour, so look out for that (I know we are. I mean, come on: Malaysia appearing in an international documentary about NOFX? How dope is that?!).

To answer some of your other questions, we're still trying to figure out what the next band will be. At some point I'll probably e-mail everyone who stuck their e-mail in the registration form with a survey listing a bunch of bands that we could feasibly bring in and find out which ones you guys would rather see (personally, I'd want to bring in Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger).

Till next time, boys and girls, and thanks again for being such a rockin' good crowd!
