Official Retirement

- Start Date: 19/07/03

- Finish Date: 26/09/06

Hello.

Yes it is true. My general laziness has made this blog a wasteland for the last year or so - and it's about time I gave it a proper burial. Being a grown up isn't fun at the best of times - and it definitely doesn't give enough free time to write numerous oh-so-witty pieces on a site like this. Which is a shame, but hey, such is life.

There were some definite good times here - and I actually talked to some decent people - who would have thought eh? I'll miss the old days - but the wheel turns, the car hits you, you get up, and stagger on. Something like that.

For any of the old crew who would like to say hello (and it would be wonderfully lovely if you did) - you can catch me at...

I don't update that much either - but at least you get away with it more there.  Oh, and I'm actually a real person there as well.  Very dramatic.

So look after yourselves lads and lasses, buachailli agus cailini -  blog me proud.

Cheerio.

Alive and overworked.

Well hello again.

The last piece I wrote here was meant to be the beginning of detailing my long and winding journey towards some sort of gainful employment.  However, (rather annoyingly for my blogging plans) only a week later I was phoned by a company who had seen my presentation of my final thesis.  They were quite interested in my project, their company was based in the same area (Cork City), and they wondered if I'd come for an interview.  I thought about it for around 1.3 seconds - and promptly said yes.

I went for the interview.  I then went for a second interview to the main office in Dublin.  And I then received a phone call offering me the job. Hurrah!

So yeah, I've been working since the start of March - it's a brand new office, with only 5 people at the moment.  Handily enough, two of those were actually in the same Masters class as myself (one was seen at the presentations like me, and one has just started after some strong efforts on my part to get him a job).  So it's a workplace where over half the employees are friends already - how handy.

Sticking with the habit of a lifetime, I'm working in I.T. - in the games industry actually - so at least daily work is a small bit more interesting than a standard 9-5.  Though the advantage of a standard 9-5 is that it's.....well.......9-5, whereas in our case we can be working all sorts of hours to get stuff done for deadlines.  My record so far is starting at 8.45am and leaving at 10.30pm. How wonderful.  *sob*

This was actually meant to be my 'retirement from 20six' piece - but I've rambled on for so long now it seems overkill to go into all that.  So I'll save that for next time.  It'll give people time to get together their glowing tributes to my life.

Tears and begging will go down nicely - thanks!

The job hunt - part 1.

I don't like looking for work.

I've never been good at it. I don't like writing CV's, I don't like
sending them out, I don't like looking for places to send them TO.

I get bored searching the net, I don't seen the point in recruitment
agencies (they just ignore/forget you), and searching the newspaper is
far too much effort.

And besides, newspapers never have something I want - always seems to
be jobs for a chef, or a mechanic, or a receptionist. None of which,
sadly, I am trained in.

Then again, a serious lack of funds has a strange way of motivating you.

Arse.

No, I'm not dead.

*taps microphone*

Hello? This thing on?

*fiddles with cables*

Helloooo?

*kicks computer* *sparks fly*

Ah. There we go. Much better.

So, err, yeah - I'm alive. Funny thing is, I'm not really sure how many
people are left from the 'old school' that actually care about that.
But hey, such is life. I've only had the chance to read a few blogs in
the last 10 minutes, but it seems that the following has happened/is
currently happening/will happen:

- technological changes, a new 20six site?

- people leaving 20six by the bucketload?

- porny-type stuff???

- squabbling?

- tons of spam?

Wow. Part of me is quite sad to have missed all that, and part of me is
just as relieved. If anyone has time on their hands, please feel free
to update me on the stories behind any of these things. Especially
number 3. ;-)

So, me. Well I've been a busy fecker, which explains the lack of
updates. Though of course the 'lazy' aspect is probably just as much to
blame. But basically the following shenanigans have been going on in my
life:

- had no Christmas or New Year whatsoever because...

- ...I was finishing my Masters. Managed to get it done and submitted,
but it was seat-of-the-pants type stuff. As usual. Won't get the result
until May or so which is a pain, but I'm happy enough with what I did.

- went to Barcelona for a few days.

- went to Dublin for a week to catch up on....news....with the missus.

- am currently wonderfully unemployed. To be fair, it's by choice for the
moment - have money saved away so that's helping. Basically have no
clue what I want to do with my life. Therefore I sleep, and go
drinking. Hurrah.

- am currently writing a few papers, after the head of the Computer
Department asked me to. I'm not sure if he was high at the time, but
why not. "Conference in May, present the papers, potential employers,
etc etc".

That's about all I think of for now. I literally had no life for the
last few months, so I'm still trying to get used to these things
called, 'sleep', 'socialising', 'free time', etc. And guess what - it's
all good fun.

So that's my update - you can sleep easy again now - for I am not dead.

Which is nice.

Celebrating all things Cork: Part 4

That's right, the Cork quadruple. Can life get much better...

Cork City FC won the Irish premier division on Friday night, with a terrific performance against Derry City, who had been our main rivals all season. Derry were a point ahead going into the final match, but the Cork win secured the county's fourth trophy of the year.

Surely now it must be clear to even the most myopic of Dublin folk that Cork is the true capital of Ireland. What can Dublin provide? No sporting achievements, heavy traffic and exhorbitant pint prices. No thanks.

Now we wait for the possible Cork quintuple, with Cork City in the cup final against Drogheda in December...

Australian 'sportsmanship'...

Now I like your country, and the people there - but your national team are thugs. The whole lot of them.

This is what I'm talking about...

Break-time.

Hello.

Some of you may remember me, I used to hang about here quite a bit. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. Due to rather large amounts of pressure, my every waking moment seems to be devoted to my final project. Which, in case you're wondering, is going fine - but the deadline is looming large on the horizon, and I still have quite a vast amount left to do. Which is nice. Ahem.

The social life has disappeared down the drain, and the internet life has completely vanished except for frantic searches on Google for answers to project problems. Which happens quite a bit actually. Which isn't so nice. I'm sure I'll look back and laugh though....

*stony silence*

So anyway, I thought I'd check in, and at least I can say I left a bit of warning if I don't show up again for another month or so. It'll be tough I know, but I'm sure you'll all manage. Be strong.
